Update re: lecture slides
It’s come to my attention that the reason you are not able to find the lecture slides is that you must access them from a computer on the forestry network. This means you will need to log in on a computer in the undergraduate computer lab in the forestry building (at the opposite end of the building from our lecture room). From there you will see all the lecture notes, including those for next week.

The powerpoint slides for week s 2 and 3 should now be available on the K drive. As I mentioned in class, I will try to put the slides up prior to every class so that you can download and print them if you wish. Justin

Go to the K drive and follow the folders 1XX and then 111. The PDF files cover all slides except for the Google Earth flyover, which is a movie file.

Understanding published statistics
It is often difficult to make sense of human development and environment statistics. Gapminder was founded by Hans Roslings to tackle that issue and not long ago was purchased by Google.
Play a bit with Gapminder world and then enjoy one of Prof. Rosling’s presentations: The seemingly impossible is possible (at TED), which is brilliant.

About a name: definitions
The course is called Trees, Forests and Environments, but what is behind a name? There is a large number of alternative definitions for each of the words that are part of the name. See this page for a good collection of definitions.
The IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) Special Report on Land-Use, Land-Use Change and Forestry discusses types of forest definitions.

Congo deforestation
Have a look at the news on the ongoing deforestation in Congo (see, for example, Google News). What are the issues creating conflict? Use Google Earth to have a look at the magnitude of Congo’s forests. Have a look at imagery in Visible Earth.
